My discussion will proceed in three parts. First, I shall explicate the implicit Westphalian presuppositions of Habermas’s public sphere theory and show that these have persisted in its major feminist, anti-racist and multicultural critiques. Second, I shall identify several distinct facets of transnationality that problematize both traditional public sphere theory and its critical counter-theorizations. Finally, I shall propose some strategies whereby public sphere theorists might begin to respond to these challenges. My overall aim is to repoliticize public sphere theory, which is currently in danger of being depoliticized.

El final del milenio y los años que corren del nuevo se caracterizan, quizá por la proximidad que los preside, por ser tiempos confusos, de incertidumbre, de transición en definitiva. La importancia de los mass media y los avances tecnológicos (sobre todo internet) en el fluir de la vida cotidiana han provocado que el conocimiento sea más rápido pero también más efímero, y que la abundante información no nos deje depurar con nitidez los resultados poéticos de las últimas décadas porque son muchos y diversos. Los nuestros son tiempos de cultura del espectáculo, de cultura rápida, de imágenes sucesivas, de proyectos digitales a los que los recientes escritores no serán ajenos.

In 2014 we took the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the 031 crew from Bern and produced a 5MINUTES double episode. Actually it's more like a triple episode, because with 14 minutes the episode is very long. But if you are interested in what the guys from 031 had to say back then, you will take your time. With the release of this episode there was a lot of feedback, about the film and the crew. From the Swiss media as well as from the scene. We can't repeat it often enough: we are a neutral medium that likes to look behind the scenes and let protagonists speak. Completely unreflective, we deliberately let things stand, and yes, we are convinced that it is "allowed" to do so. This has been our approach for many years and will remain so.
